Holiday treasures to highlight Pemberville Holiday Home Tour

Margie Shaffer shows hand stitched crazy quilt made from men’s ties and handed down from her mother.

PEMBERVILLE – When Margie Shaffer had to downsize her home before moving to Otterbein Senior Living two years ago, she had a difficult time deciding which lifetime of collectibles to keep and what to let go. Sorting through her Christmas decorations was exceptionally tough.

In the process, she uncovered treasures such as posters her father had done for a high school project over a century ago, a handmade nativity set, and a tree dedicated to her children and four grandchildren that started and continued after she bought an ornament for her first grandchild.

Shaffer also kept a beautifully hand stitched crazy quilt made from men’s ties and handed down from her mother. “She was a great influence on me and my decorating, even though at times decorations were sparse,” she said. Displaying the cherished quilt is another of Shaffer’s holiday traditions.

Now, with a whittled down collection of her favorite holiday decorations, two decorated trees and other family treasures that are dear to her, Shaffer will share the holiday season and her decorated home as one of the five homes featured in the 26th Holiday Home Tour sponsored by the Friends of the Pemberville Public Library.

The tours will be from 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Pemberville Public Library or at the individual homes on the day of the tour. Refreshments will be served at the library at 375 E. Front St., Pemberville, during the tour.

In addition to Shaffer’s Otterbein Senior Living home at 1007 Tulip Court, Pemberville, the other featured homes on the tour are: Kathy and Frank Barrow at 22011 Luckey Road, Luckey; Stephanie and Zach Frobose at 6170 Alexander Road, Pemberville; Kathy and Roger Burtchin at 18215 Wegman Road, Pemberville; and Charmagne and Terry Hoepf at 5606 N. River Road, Pemberville.

The tour is a major fundraiser for the Friends of the Pemberville Public Library. The Friends are also sponsoring a Decorated Tree Raffle as an additional holiday fundraiser. Trees will be on display at the Pemberville Public Library starting Monday, Nov. 28. Raffle tickets, which are $1 each or six tickets for $5, will be on sale Nov. 28-Dec. 15 at the library. Winners’ names will be drawn on Dec. 16.
