Latta introduces bill to restrict drugs used to induce abortion

U.S. Rep. Bob Latta in May, 2019

U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, has introduced legislation that would restrict the use of  existing abortion drugs and forbid the approval of new ones.

House Resolution 4399 would amend the Fedeal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act “to prohibit the approval of new abortion drugs, to prohibit investigational use exemptions for abortion drugs, and to impose additional regulatory requirements with respect to previously approved drugs.”

In a press release Latta, who has a 100 percent rating from the National Right to Life Committee, said that despite a drop in the abortion rate, chemically induced abortions now account for a larger percentage of terminations.

Abortion drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, are used to terminate a pregnancy in the first stages up to 10 weeks.

These, Latta contends, are more dangerous then surgical abortions.

Other sources, however, contend the complications from these abortions are no more severe or frequent than those that occur during a natural miscarriage.

This bill was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for consideration. The committee is chaired by Democrat Frank Pallone of New Jersey.

Latta is a member of the committee.
