Man charged with leaving 2-year-old in running vehicle while he shopped

A Perrysburg man was charged with child endangering and drug abuse after reportedly leaving his 2-year-old daughter alone in the vehicle for more than a half hour while he was shopping in Walmart.

Bowling Green Police Division received a call Friday at 4:44 p.m. about a baby alone in a vehicle in the Walmart parking lot. The child was in a car seat, the car was running, and the driver’s window was down.

An announcement was made in the store about the unattended child, but no one responded, BG Police Chief Tony Hetrick said. An officer waited by the car to ensure the child’s safety.

At 5:20 p.m., the father, Nicholas R. Smith, 26, of Perrysburg, came back to the vehicle. He had a warrant for his arrest from Lake Township, and when searched he reportedly had an Adderall pill in his pocket that he had no prescription for.

The mother came to pick up the child, Hetrick said.
