Mary Shelley (Carr) Harkness of Bowling Green, Ohio passed away August 28, 2017. She was born on December 21, 1923 in Rome Georgia. She was a true Southern Belle, having grown up on a plantation in North Florida near Tallahassee. Yet she somehow agreed to marry a Northerner whose middle name is Sherman.
Shelley graduated from Monticello High School and Florida State College for Women. After years of internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Florida, she became a certified ASPC medical technician.
She married David Harkness on January 17, 1948. After moving to Bowling Green and raising her children, she spent 19 years at the Health Center of BGSU. Upon retirement, Shelley and David wintered in Destin FL., and spent time traveling to places like Australia, New Zealand, Guatemala, Eastern Canada and the Western US. She was a homemaker and wonderful mom to four children: Paul Joseph (Kat), Daniel Sherman (Anka), Katherine Marie (Eric) Hall and John Charles (Teri).
At one point in time, Shelley was very active in the St Mark’s Lutheran church community in BG. She was an avid reader of non-fiction, and also loved to sew and cook. Shelley was blessed with a gracious and gentle temperament and a fabulous sense of humor. Never one to complain, she could barely manage to say a cross word about anyone.
She is survived and will be sorely missed by her husband of 69 years David, her children and brother Dan (Ruth) Carr of West Haven, Connecticut, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, three nieces and one nephew.
Shelley’s funeral service will be held on Thursday August 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Dunn Funeral Home, located in the Historical District of Bowling Green at 408 West Wooster Street. Pastor Rob Spicer will officiate. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bowling Green. Visitation will begin Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
