A Michigan man was charged with abduction after Bowling Green Police Division received multiple calls from city residents reporting a woman screaming for help.

Darek Chelminiak, 44, of Lambertville, was taken to Wood County Jail after BGPD arrested him for domestic violence, abduction, OVI refusal and violating a traffic control device.

Police received the first phone calls Sunday around 10:30 p.m., from residents in the 300 and 400 blocks of Wallace Ave., who reported seeing a man trying to drag a woman into a vehicle.

As officers talked with those residents, another caller reported a woman screaming for help in the 700 block of Clough Street. Officers responded to Clough Street and found the woman being sheltered in an apartment there.

The woman, also from Lambertville, told police that she and her fiance, Chelminiak, were at a wedding reception at City Park when they began arguing about leaving. She told police that he grabbed her by the hair, pulled her into the vehicle, and sped off with her door still open. She told police that Chelminiak struck her in the face at least twice, and she believed she temporarily passed out.

When Chelminiak stopped the car in the area of Clough Street and South College Avenue, the woman reportedly got out of the car and ran to get away from him. She was screaming for help when Chelminiak caught up with her.

Residents in the 700 block of Clough told police they heard a woman screaming for help outside, and saw Chelminiak carrying the woman who was trying to get away from him. One of the residents yelled at Chelminiak, who reportedly dropped the woman and walked away.

The woman ran to the apartment, where she took shelter until police arrived.

As police were talking with the woman and the apartment residents, another officer saw a vehicle driving fast in the area of Troup and East Wooster streets. The vehicle continued onto West Wooster, reportedly going west in the eastbound lanes starting at the construction area at Church Street.

When stopped, Chelminiak said he did not strike his fiancee, but that she punched him in the face once. Police performed field sobriety tests on Chelminiak, who reportedly refused to give a breath sample.
