Not In Our Town stands with marginalized people

(Submitted by NOT IN OUR TOWN BG)

Following this year’s campaign and election, Not In Our Town BG is aware of a climate of concern arising locally and nationally among and on behalf of people who are often vulnerable and marginalized.   We share in this concern.  With the election behind us, we stand solidly in support of all in our community who may feel endangered or disrespected.   None in our town should live with such fears, and we work for the day when none do.

In such a climate NIOT BG underlines our long partnership with both city and campus police, and we encourage anyone experiencing prejudice and/or abusive behavior to report to them.  We call on our network and community to listen for fearful voices, to actively care for one another and to boldly speak up for our vision of a diverse, inclusive and safe, supportive community.

NIOT BG encourages and supports all efforts and events which express this vision, and which give these vital issues and fears visibility. We will publicize them on our Facebook page as we become aware of them.  We commend to all the “Build A Better BG” week, from Nov. 14-18, of which we are a key partner.  The Peace March on Nov. 18 (noon, from downtown to campus) will be a signature moment for us all to express solidarity to our vision.   As the post-election year unfolds, we pledge to continue generating events to illuminate fears, confront hate behavior, promote understanding, and build bridges in our town.
