Inspired by a true story, “Bright Star” takes place in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina between 1945–46 with flashbacks to 1923. This sweeping tale of love and redemption unfolds as literary editor, Alice Murphy, meets a soldier returning home from World War II, reminding her of the child she lost and launching her on a journey to understand her past.
In 2016, “Bright Star” received five Tony nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.
Gary Miller, who plays Daddy Murphy in PMT’s production, shares what attracted him to “Bright Star”: “I love the show because the story is very moving – a real tear-jerker – and the music is just beautiful. My favorite part is the happy ending. The character I can most relate to is Daddy Murphy (my own character), because he is much like my father was – authoritarian and seemingly unfeeling, yet with a tender streak that ultimately came out. My favorite song is ‘Way Back in the Day,’ because it is absolutely gorgeous and with deep feeling.”
