Recent BGHS grad: Residents can’t expect teachers to teach & students to learn in the worst building in the area

I graduated from Bowling Green High School in 2021. I had a great experience and BGHS shaped me into the person that I am today. I am writing because it is disappointing, and quite frankly insulting, that our town does not want to invest in the current and future young people of our community. A better facility is the bare minimum that this community can provide, so that students at least have working bathrooms, livable learning conditions (heat and cooling) and adequate space and resources.

Some of the common complaints that I hear a lot about my generation is that we are lazy, don’t want to work, and have no academic motivation. Obviously, these problems are not going to be solved by a new facility, and I know that. But these issues are only exacerbated when we see and hear that the community does not want to support us, and do not believe that we are capable of being “hard workers” like their generation. It’s hard to learn under these conditions. I understand that you may not have kids in the district or don’t have school-aged children, but I think it is only fair that we try to give these kids a working shot at a better working environment and in-turn a better education.

Finally, to those who claim that BGCS is not “producing” successful students, I would love to introduce you to some of my friends. Those friends that are going to be the future doctors, nurses, teachers, hair stylists, mechanics, politicians, and productive and caring citizens of this town, all thanks to the teachers and support they got. But we cannot keep expecting our teachers and students to be learning in the worst building in our area.

Most of you would not want to teach in 100+ degree classrooms or wear your winter coats when the boiler breaks. You wouldn’t want to travel multiple levels to find a working toilet. You wouldn’t want to be the last kid in the classroom who didn’t have a desk because there was no more space. You wouldn’t want to be embarrassed of your facility and community. So why will we continue to make more students go through this?
