Sheriff reports fatal crashes up, total injury crashes down in 2020

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office has released statistics for crashes handled by the office for 2020.

The total crashes handled by the Wood County Sheriff’s Office came in at 818, whereas in 2019 there were 1,027 crashes.

Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn stated that overall with numbers down compared to last year is a good stat. The office takes statistics on all crashes its deputies handle; from private property crashes, injury crashes, fatalities, DUI and DUS and car vs. deer crashes.

The sheriff believes this is due to COVID-19 and fewer people traveling for extended periods of time in 2020. Also it was a mild winter both in early 2020 and the last few months of 2020. Unfortunately the fatal crashes went from three to eight but injury crashes went from 270 to 194. Having the total number of crashes down inside of Wood County is a positive statistic.

Some of the statistics broken down are the following for 2020.

  • Total Injury Crashes: 205 in 2019; 157 in 2020.
  • Total Injured Persons: 270 in 2019;194 in 2020.
  • Total Private Property Crashes: 36 in 2019; 35 in 2020..
  • Total Fatal Crashes: 3 in 2019; 8 in 2020 accounting for nine deaths.
  • Total DUS/DUI crashes: 229 in 2019; 193 in 2020.
  • Total Car vs. Deer crashes: 280 in 2019; 231 in 2020.
