Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Casimir A. Von Sacken was honored Thursday (9-28-23) for his quick actions when coming upon a house fire in July on Toledo’s east side. Trooper Von Sacken was awarded the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Distinguished Service Medallion at the Bowling Green Post on behalf of Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol superintendent.

In the early morning hours of July 15, Trooper Von Sacken was giving some people a ride home following a traffic stop where the driver was arrested for OVI. While taking the vehicle passengers home, he came upon a house fire at a vacant house on Mott Avenue near Elgin in Toledo.

Trooper Von Sackensafely positioned his patrol car with its emergency overhead lights activated and radioed the Bowling Green Dispatch Center to request the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department. He immediately sprung into action and ran through the smoke to alert the next-door neighbors of the impending danger as the siding on their house was melting. Trooper Von Sacken ensured the neighbors made it safely out of their house as the fire spread quickly, potentially saving their lives.

For demonstrating a sense of urgency and rendering aid, Trooper Von Sacken was recognized at a ceremony this morning.

Trooper Von Sacken began his Patrol career in October 2010 as a member of the 150th Academy Class. He earned his commission in April of the following year and was assigned to the Lima Post. In 2012, he transferred to his current assignment at the Bowling Green Post.
