Talk on Japanese pop culture today at BGSU

From BGSU OFFICE OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

The Bowling Green State University Asian Studies program and the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit are pleased to co-host a special event about Japanese style and culture Oct. 31.

During “Fashion, Style and Popular Culture from Japan,” attendees will hear from Dr. Jin Nakamura, associate professor of Tourism and Community Studies at Atomi University in Tokyo, Japan, about the intersection between different elements of Japanese pop culture, including pop culture fashion, music and animation. He will pay particular attention to how Japanese consumer behaviors influence and are influenced by pop culture by applying fashion theory to comparative case studies of the evolutions of gothic-lolita, seifuku (school uniform) and Harajuku-style fashions and the role commercial media has played in facilitating their growth.

Nakamura’s career spans 20 years of academic, governmental and private sector experience. He received his Ph.D. from Tokyo Institute of Technology, and a law degree from Kyoto University. Nakamura has served as a consultant for Japan’s Office in the United Nations’ World Food Program, chairman of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Fashion Policy Investigation Working Group, a committee member of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s Urban Renaissance Step Up Project, and as a visiting or full-time professor and lecturer at universities throughout Japan.

Mayuko Chashiro, education, culture and public relations for the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit, and Akiko Jones, director of the BGSU Asian Studies program, will also be in attendance. The program will begin at 5 p.m. in 228 Bowen-Thompson Student Union.
