Winner of tied race for county recorder to be in limbo until provisional and absentee ballots counted

Early voting at Wood County Courthouse for primary election

The winner of  the Wood County Recorder primary race will be unknown until all the provisional and absentee ballots are counted, according to Terry Burton, director of the Wood County Board of Elections.

Incumbent James Matuszak and challenger Connor Rose, both Republicans, tied Tuesday night with 6,189 votes.

Burton predicted the official vote count, to be certified on April 3, at 8:30 a.m., will likely be close enough to require a recount.

“I would say it’s highly unlikely it will be a tie, but it was highly unlikely to happen the first time,” Burton said Thursday morning.

If the certified vote count is still a tie, the race will be decided by the flip of a coin. The last time the board of elections had to perform a coin toss to decide a race was in November of 1993 involving two Northwood City Council candidates.
