Wood County EMA reports on Ohio COVID-19 responses

Wood County Emergency Management Agency’s Emergency Operation Center’s Situation Report on COVID-19 Response for June 5.

Executive Summary:

Gov. Mike DeWine

The Governor started with condolences to the Diocese of Youngstown on the death of Bishop George Murry this morning and his positive accomplishments. The memorial service for Annie Glenn will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. through the WOSU Website as well as various others. 

A member of the Ohio National Guard who was sent to assist in Washington D.C. has been relieved of duty based on a white supremacist post. He is currently being investigated by the FBI, relived of all duties and will be permanently removed based on the FBI findings. General Harris is working with the Director of Public Safety to ensure this type of event occurs again. 

The Governor’s office will be providing details of COVID-19 testing in minority communities,

Dr. Amy Acton is creating a new position in the Ohio Department of Health on minority health matters and police reform to ensure those officers performing their duties at the highest of standards are not being over shadowed by the negative actions of a few.

COVID-19 testing is being expanded to anyone with symptoms using the private sector to assist. Locations for testing can be found at the Ohio Coronavirus website www.coronavirus.ohio.gov for both private sector testing as well local community health centers. 

Any business or venue not currently open will be able to open shortly as working groups are devising plans.

DeWine reiterated the opening of the state must be done in phases. They are monitoring daily statistics as well as the most up to date scientific information to make their decisions. But the must keep in mind the lag time between exposure and when symptoms may occur. As governor, he must be cognizant of his decisions as it impacts all Ohioans. 

Effective June 19, casinos, racinos, amusement parks, water parks theaters and outdoor venues may open as long as they have an approved plan on file.

General Harris provided an overview on the current nursing homes testing process. They have worked with experts in the field to develop strategies on how needs to be tested as we as procedures. The National Guard will take this information and go to the nursing homes to assist with testing and transportation to the labs. Based on the results, they can assist the nursing homes with developing plans on how to set up the facility and care for the patients as appropriate. The team is all medically trained with the lead Major Jessica Taylor, formerly with UTMC and graduate of the University of Toledo.

Lt. Governor Husted reiterated the governor’s remarks regarding the opening of Ohio and these businesses opening must have a plan on file. He complemented the local business community on the proactive stance to make their business and events safe for visitors, customers and employees.  They are working on plans for adult/youth contact sports as well as large venues to appropriately scale for social distancing and cleaning requirements.

Acton said the trends are staying even at this time as Ohio has a good grip on COVID-19. She discussed these are challenging times shared by us all. As businesses open we must be more intentional to social distancing, wearing masks and cleaning. Think before you go; look for resources to help best prepare for where you are going to make sure you are prepared to be as safe as you can be. We should remember to go with grace, being nice to everyone as we are all stressed with current events.

County EOC Objectives:

1. Coordinate the county’s response to limit spread of COVID-19; and maintain medical care.

2. Provide timely, clear, and consistent messaging to the public, stakeholders and media on the status of COVID-19 and actions the public can take to keep themselves safe.

3. Determine how county agencies will continue delivery of essential services to Wood County residents while following COVID-19 public health guidelines.

4. Prevent, identify, mitigate, and respond to COVID19 hotspots within the county.

EMA:

• State EMA – Over the past 24 hours, ODH reported 442 (36,792) total new cases, 75 (6,251) hospitalizations, and 21 (1,604) ICU Admissions, all of which were below their respective 21-day averages. There were 41 (2,299) deaths, which was above the respective 21-day average. ODH reported an additional hot spot identified in a Mercer County-based congregate care facility. The State EOC continues to provide mission support to previously identified areas of concern. A request to extend Title 32 orders for Ohio National Guard members is in progress. The second statewide push of PPE was completed. An additional push has been approved for next week. State PPE stores continue to be transferred to a secondary location per the current storage strategy while long-term storage planning continues.
