Students from Pike Delta York Middle School, Toledo Early College, Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering, and Sylvania Northview participated Saturday (March 11) at the Region 1 Competition for Ohio History Day.
The exhibits displayed in the BGSU Student Union covered a wide range of history from Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Dracula, to the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. From the Boston Massacre to the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.
It’s important to study the past to know how we arrived at where we are, said Jocelin Freli, a ninth grader from Toledo Early College.
As a young Black woman those who struggled a half century ago had an impact on her life now. It’s important to value their contributions.
Sophia Williams, an eighth grader from Toledo Early College, studied the battle against polio. “There are a lot of people who changed society for the better.”
Learning about them, she said, “changes your perception.”
Her classmate Yalieshka Yax was drawn to studying the Wright Brothers because she herself is interested in flight.
