Free lecture to discuss Declaration of Independence

The Grand Rapids Historical Society has announced a 250th lecture series celebrating 250 years of American history. The programs arranged chronologically from Fallen Timbers to the Vietnam War will take place from April though October. The speakers will be featured in the auditorium of the historic Grand Rapids Town Hall, 24282 Front St.

The topic of the next program of the series will be the Declaration of Independence, presented by Dr. Adam Thomas. The lecture will take place on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m.

Thomas is executive director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. His teaching and research are concerned with the history of political philosophy and American political thought. In particular, he studies the foundations of law, justice, and constitutionalism in Cicero, Augustine, and Thomas Aquinas.

From 2019-2024, Thomas was associate director of the Lyceum Program at Clemson University. He previously held appointments as postdoctoral research associate in the James Madison Program at Princeton and T.W. Smith postdoctoral fellow in Western and American political thought in the Tocqueville Program at Furman University. Thomas received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Boston College and his B.A. from Furman University.

There will be 13 program presented as part of this lecture series. Admission is free, and everyone is cordially invited to help celebrate this milestone birthday of the country by attending these programs.
