As angry supporters of President Donald Trump breached the U.S. Capitol Building today and injured Capitol police, about 25 peaceful protesters gathered in Bowling Green’s Wooster Green.

“I’m here supporting the democratic process, and also showing my resistance at the legislative coup that is going on,” Maria Zirbel, of Bowling Green, said.

As Trump spoke to his supporters – further fueling COVID-denying, gun-carrying, white supremecists to never give up – Bowling Green area residents stood quietly for democracy and the Constitution.

“I want to make a stand for democracy,” Marilyn Bowlus, of Pemberville, said. “I think it’s just wrong what they are doing, and they should be ashamed. They are traitors.”

And as members of Congress fought the acceptance of the electoral college count – after challenges have been rejected by judges nominated by Trump – people on Wooster Green held their signs supporting the rights of voters to choose their leaders.

“We just feel there is a definite threat to our democratic process right now,” Bob Callecod, of Bowling Green, said.

The rally was organized by the League of Women Voters, which nationwide has asked that Congress not defy the Constitution.

“This is the only thing to do,” Gaynelle Predmore, of Bowling Green, said as she held her sign in Wooster Green. “I hope they come to their senses and do the right thing. Follow the Constitution. I can’t believe it has come down to this.”

Bob Callecod held a sign stating that elected officials must accept the outcome of the election.

“We just feel there is a definite threat to our democratic process right now,” Callecod said. “It’s frightening that people in authority are defying and trying to subvert the democratic process.”

Also joining in the rally was Paul Haas, of Bowling Green.

“I’m standing up for democracy. This is absolutely bizarre,” Haas said, wondering what will happen next. “I’m just wondering what is going to happen on inauguration day.”
