The pickle plant on the southeast side of Bowling Green is preparing for growth. And Wednesday evening, the city Planning Commission took a step to pave the way for more pickle production.

At the request of the Hartung Brothers Farms, the planning commission voted to recommend that City Council approve the annexation of nearly 19 acres from Center Township, adjacent to the current pickle plant at 815 S. Dunbridge Road.

The annexation request was already approved by the Wood County Commissioners.

Also at the request of Hartung Farms, the city planning commission recommended the interim zoning for the acreage be changed from its current A-1 agriculture zoning to IE innovation and employment zoning. The current pickle production acreage is already zoned for innovation and employment.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting, the planning commission recommended approval for 503 Buttonwood Ave. to be designated as an historic property on the Local Historic Register. The home, currently owned by Charles and Jean Ladd, was built in 1888 and formerly was the site of an ice cream factory.

The Ladds requested the historic designation, which will go before City Council next.

In other business at the meeting, City Planning Director Heather Sayler reported on zoning permit status so far this year in Bowling Green. New construction permits total 362 this year, compared to 313 last year. New single family home permits are 38, compared to 28 last year, she said.
