BG Police respond to suicidal man sitting on the ground with a gun

Bowling Green Police Division responded to a report of a suicidal man sitting on the ground, holding a gun in the 800 block of Lafayette Boulevard, near Poe Road, on Thursday around 9:15 p.m.

The first officer on the scene told the man that police did not want anyone to get hurt, and asked him to discard his gun. As other units were arriving on the scene, the man ejected the magazine from the gun and cleared the gun slide.

Officers smelled a strong odor of alcohol from the man, who told police he planned to take his life, and left his home so his family would not find him. Police spoke with his family, who said he suffers from PTSD.

He was taken to Wood County Hospital because of his level of intoxication. Since he was still very intoxicated, he was taken to Wood County Jail, where a mental health service would work with him once he was sober.
