BGHS Drama Club will present original play on dangers of sex trafficking

"Free to Fly" will be presented March 10 at 7 p.m.

The Bowling Green High School Drama Club in conjunction with BG City Schools will present the final revised script of “Free To Fly” (formerly titled “Lily’s Shadow” and “Lily’s Wings”) Tuesday March 10 at 7 p.m. in the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center for parents and students ages 11+. 

(The play was originally scheduled for Thursday Feb. 13, but had t be postponed because of weather.)

“Free To Fly”is a one-act play written over the course of eight years by members of the BGHS Drama Club the BGHS Drama Club has been developing a one-act play for young audiences that draws attention to the dangers of human sex trafficking of minors. As part of the process the actors worked professional playwright Roxanne Schroeder-Arce. Now in its final version, the club hopes to have the play published.

The play is intended for young audiences and parents.

The 45-minute play will be framed by a short presentation about human sex trafficking and a talk-back.

“Free To Fly” tells the story of 11-year-old Lily, whose older sister’s friend is trafficked by Vic, a young man she believes to be her boyfriend. When Vic also befriends Lily, she finds herself in imminent danger. Lily must rely on intuition and self-agency to escape the threatening system.

Incorporating shadow puppets and music, “Free To Fly” features senior Thomas Long and Sophi Hachtel, juniors Terra Sloane and Cody Ray, sophomore Xiuyu Shi, and freshmen Steven Edwards and Riley Rader. The play is directed by Dr. Jo Beth Gonzalez.
