For more than 20 years, Bowling Green Police Officer Robin Short taught CPR to fellow officers, local students and teachers.

In February, she put her training into action.

Short, who normally works as the D.A.R.E. officer in Bowling Green City Schools, had been shifted over to road patrol since the schools were meeting remotely with students until recently.

Police Chief Tony Hetrick told Bowling Green City Council Monday evening that on Feb. 1, Short was dispatched to a home on Birch Street for a man who had collapsed and was not breathing.

“She immediately initiated CPR,” Hetrick said. “Thanks to her efforts, Officer Short helped save the life of the victim, Dennis Zalinski.”

“Officer Short’s quick response and her knowledge of CPR from being the police division CPR instructor for over 20 years, contributed immensely to the positive outcome of the incident,” the chief said.

For her efforts, Short was presented with a Meritorious Service Award Monday evening at the city council meeting.

Both Zalinski and his wife were at the meeting, and presented Short with flowers.

“I’m so glad I could help,” Short said.

“Me too,” responded Zalinski.

In the hallway outside the council chamber, the Zalinskis posed for photographs with Short.

“She kept me going,” Zalinski said. “We’re both indebted to her.”

And Short reacted to seeing Zalinski in much better shape than her first encounter with him on Feb. 1.

“I’m happy to see Mr. Zalinski up and walking,” she said. “What an amazing difference.”

Council President Mark Hollenbaugh thanked Short for her life saving actions.

“I’m thankful you chose to serve and protect us,” he said to Short.
