BGSU COVID-19 cases increase as expected with students’ return

The number of COVD-19 cases among BGSU students has gone up, Ben Batey, the universty’s chief health officer, reported today (Sept. 2, 2020).

In the second of his weekly reports, Batey said that the increases were expected with students returning to campus.

All of those cases, he said, were among students living off campus, and the spread was within households. If one roommate tests positive, the others likely will as well.

He urged students to limit their interactions to a close-knit group. As soon as they start extending their number of contacts, the danger of catching and spreading the virus increases.

Batey also announced that the university has launched a dashboard with COVID-19 data.

The dashboard shows that from Aug. 20 to Aug. 31, 38 cases, all students, have been reported to the university, including one from the Firelands campus. This doubles the number that had been reported since March, bringing that total to 75. That total includes seven employees.

No students are in isolation on campus, and six students were quarantined in residence halls. Students in isolation have tested positive for COVID-19 while those in quarantine are those who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and are awaiting test results.

The university has performed 420 surveillance tests of asymptomatic individuals since March and found six positive cases, all students, a rate of 1.4 percent.

Batey encouraged members of the campus community to download the #CampusClear app for wellness checks, and to report positive of pending test results to health@bgsu.edu or by calling the BGSU COVID-19 Hotline, 419-372-3000.
