Building community school better investment than pouring money into old ones

It is well known and accepted that strong schools are a key component of a strong community. It is also well known that Bowling Green’s elementary schools are outdated and do not meet today’s instructional needs.

Something needs to be done to improve our schools and the proposed 1.5 mill property tax and .25 percent income tax will meet those needs by consolidating Conneaut, Kenwood and Crim elementary schools into a community elementary school.

Building a new school will be far better than pouring money into old existing structures. Some benefits include: lower operational costs with only one school instead of several; a safer environment with all students in one building; lower busing costs; enabling teachers to collaborate to address students’ individual needs; and greater efficiencies of resources, to name a few.

Can we afford it? Can we not afford it? We have a responsibility to provide a quality education for our youth and future generations. It is the best investment we can make, helping to provide and promote student success in a complex and increasingly technological, extremely competitive business world. Education is key to making this happen.

Judy and I consider it a civic duty to support this levy despite no longer having children in the Bowling Green schools. Why? Our three children were the beneficiaries of an excellent educational background provided by quality teachers that has led to productive careers. The Bowling Green community supported the schools for them and other children at that time and we want to continue that support for today’s youngsters so they can receive a sound education.

We owe it to the students, teachers and the community to make this investment in our schools and the quality of life in Bowling Green.

We urge you to consider voting FOR the Bowling Green School levy on November 5.
