Dallas teen wins Dubois Piano Competition at BGSU

Shiv Yajnik, a pianist from Dallas, has won the 2021 David D. Dubois competition at Bowling Green State University.

Laura Melton, the festival’s founding coordinator, announced  the winners of the competition Saturday night.

Now in is 11th year, the competition moved to a virtual format this year because of the pandemic.

The festival drew 38 semi-finalists from around the United States and China. From that field the BGSU piano faculty selected 10 finalists.

Yajnik won the Dubois Competition’s $3,000 top prize. Yajnik also composes and is founder of Musicare, a club that  spreads the joy of music in their community

Other winners were:

  • Katherine Liu, a 16, who studies with HaeSun Palk, of  the New England Conservatory, second prize, $2,000.
  • Natalie Chow, of Livingston, New Jersey, third prize, $1,000.
  • Aleks Shameti, 15, who moved to the United States from his native Armenia, at age 10, honorable mention.

The competition is open to pianists age 13 through 18, who have not graduated from high school.
