Library & La Conexion celebrate kids & reading

Shanaia Cellis reads the story of Mexican rancher and healer Juana Briones during Celebrate Dia! in May, 2018.

From WOOD COUNTY DISTRICT PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Children’s Place of the Wood County District Public Library is collaborating with La Conexión and BG Parks & Rec for an annual celebration of El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros, Children’s Day/Book Day at the library on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 p.m.

Children from La Conexión will share “Dreamers/Soñadores,” by Yuyi Morales, in English and Spanish.  “Dreamers,” the winner of the 2019 Pura Belpre Illustrator Award as well as a NYT Best Illustrated Book of 2018, is an autobiographical immigration story done in mixed media.  Children’s picture books and the public library that Morales and her young son frequented played a vital role in developing their confidence, inspiration, and education.  Vivid imagery of monarch butterflies is a strong theme throughout the book.

A naturalist from BG Parks and Rec will share information about monarch butterflies and their migration in our community as well as hands-on crafts.

A collaborative art project will also be available as well as snacks.

The community is encouraged to look for and read the Dreamers/Soñadores Storybook Walk installed at the Simpson Garden Park Butterfly Garden with thanks to Vicki Knauerhase and support from the BG Kiwanis Club.

April 30th is an annual celebration of El Día de los Niños/El Día de los Libros, Children’s Day/Book Day, an American Library Association initiative emphasizing the importance of connecting all children from all backgrounds with library materials in many languages and about many cultures.  La Conexión is a welcoming resource of unity and representation for the Latino/a community of Wood and surrounding counties in Ohio.
