More cowbell! will bring in more money for the BG Community Foundation at the Bowling Green Area Community Bands’ spring concert Sunday, May 21 at 4 p.m. in the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center.
Four local celebrities will join the band for the final number for a tribute to the classic Saturday Night skit “More Cowbell” that featured Will Ferrell, who wrote the routine, and Christopher Walken. Each will perform as cowbell soloist on a popular tune from the 1960s or 1970s.
As they exit the auditorium, audience members will be able to vote on their favorite by dropping money into buckets designated for each soloist.
The guests will be:
Clint Corpe, radio host, on “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper,” the song featured in the original
Prudy Brott, owner of Sunset Bistro, on “Low Rider”
Derek Van Der Merwe, BGSU Athletic Director, on “(Baby You Can) Drive My Car”
Frieda Falcon on “Oye Como Va”
In its concert narration, which will be read by Keith Guion, the community band narration explains they wanted to benefit the foundation. “The Bowling Green Community Foundation has made it possible for our community life to be powerfully enriched, guided by their vision: ‘Striving for a brighter community for everyone.’”
The theme of the concert is “Dancing into Spring.”
Before the downbeat a Patriotic Prelude of fife and drum music will be performed by the band’s flutists and percussionists.
Evie Van Vorhis will perform the National Anthem to begin the concert.
The audience will be invited to sing along with Alfred Reed’s Luigi Denza’ “ Funiculi, Funicula,” which celebrates the Italian dance the Tarantella.
The waltz will come to the fore in “Le Rein de la Mer, or Queen of the Sea
Concert Waltzes” by the March King John Philip Sousa.
“Eine Kleine Yiddish Ragmusic” by Adam Gorb spotlights the rhythm of the foxtrot. In the number, Gorb synthesizes of Scott Joplin’s ragtime blended with Jewish klezmer.
Before introducing the quartet of cowbell virtuosi, the concert band will perform a medley of tunes by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul from the 2017 movie “The Greatest Showman.”
“The film uses powerful dance moves and popular music to celebrate the unique identities and uncommon skills often considered outside from society’s mainstream, where the circus and vaudeville are where society’s rejects can find a safe and accepting home,” the band’s narration explains.
The BiG Band BG, will also perform a set during the concert.
