An obscure corner of downtown Bowling Green is getting some color.
A team of artists, led by Gordon Ricketts, is painting a mural looking out onto the parking lots behind the 100 block of South Main Street.
The structure is an extension of the building that houses Kabob It with a storefront on East Wooster.
Ricketts said he was approached by the building’s owners – Lloyd Triggs and Megan Newlove, Tony and Sarah Zmarzly, and Andy and Megan Newlove – about creating the mural. During the past several summers Ricketts has taught a class at the BGSU School of Art on mural painting. The class is responsible for several murals in Toledo. That class was canceled this summer when all courses went online.
Also, last summer, he designed the mural on Arlyn’s Good Beer on Hankey Avenue.
This new mural includes images of blue donkeys set against circular patterns of white, tan, and red dots that are inspired by Australian aboriginal art.
Ricketts said he’s been inspired to incorporate the aboriginal at since a major exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art in 2013.
The work on the mural is expected to be completed this week.
