Ohio House upholds Confederate flag sales at fairs

The Ohio House of Representative early Friday morning tabled a motion that would have banned the sale of Confederate flags

The amendment sponsored by State Rep. Juanita Brent (D-Cleveland) was intended to be attached to House Bill 665 that updates regulations for county fairs. Her earlier attempt to add the amendment also failed when it was presented in the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee.

State Rep. Haraz Ghanbari (R-Perrysburg) voted to table, on what was a largely party-line vote.

In a statement, Brent, the ranking Democrat on the Agriculture Committee, said the flag  “is a banner of white supremacy and a reminder of our nation’s original sin of slavery.” That they should still be displayed at fairs meant to celebrate what is best about Ohio is “a real shame and black eye” on the House.

She also tried to get through an amendment that would have cut state funding to any fair that sold Confederate flags and memorabilia. That also failed.
