From TOLEDO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Toledo Symphony Orchestra announced that internationally-acclaimed violinist Benjamin Beilman, past winner of the Toledo Symphony League’s Young Artist Competition will perform Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra on Friday, March 4 and Saturday, March 5, at 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art’s Peristyle Theater. The two ProMedica Masterworks Series performances are made possible by Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP.

In-person and livestreaming tickets are available at toledosymphony.com, by calling 419-246-8000, or visiting the box office at 1838 Parkwood Ave.

Described as “a remarkable talent, delivering playing of rare insight and generosity, as captivating as it is gloriously entertaining,” American violinist Benjamin Beilman, 32, is winning plaudits across the globe for his compelling and impassioned performances, his deep rich tone, and searing lyricism. Beilman has performed with many major orchestras worldwide, including Rotterdam Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Zurich Tonhalle, Sydney Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Houston Symphony, and Philadelphia Orchestra, both at Carnegie Hall. Beilman plays the “Engleman” Stradivarius from 1709 on loan from the Nippon Music Foundation.

In addition to Coleridge-Taylor’s Violin Concerto, the program on March 4 and 5 also features the TSO premiere performance of New Zealand composer Salina Fisher’s “Murmuring Light.” The piece is inspired by the behavior of birds and their responsiveness to movement. Fisher explores the delicate balance of a bird’s individual freedom with the safety they feel in numbers and how they move in each other’s direction collectively.

“Murmuring Light” won Manhattan School of Music’s Carl Kanter Award for Excellence in Orchestral Composition in May 2019 and was premiered by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra led by conductor Giordano Bellincampi who will also conduct the TSO’s performances on March 4 and 5.

The program concludes with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, last performed by the TSO in 2013 with former Music Director Stefan Sanderling. Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony, written in 1888, is often compared to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony with its tragedy to triumph narrative. The work can best be described as Tchaikovsky’s contemplation of personal fate which is the underlying theme throughout all four movements.
