Richard W Gill

Richard Wayne Gill, 72, passed away on April 26, 2018 at his home in Portage, OH. A longtime resident, Richard was an active member of the Lions Club, The Wood County Historical Society, the American Legion, and a hospital volunteer as well as a former mayor and city council member. He married Sandra Noch of Wakeman, OH on September 2nd, 1967.

Richard was born on April 1st, 1946 in Dayton, OH to parents Herman and Eleanor Gill of Xenia, OH. He attended Bowling Green State University from 1964 to 1968, and earned a Bachelor’s degree in English. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Army Infantry from 1969-1970. He was an English Teacher in Fostoria, OH from 1971 to 1978, and was on active duty with the Ohio National Guard at the Armory in Bowling Green for 20 years. He later worked as a real estate appraiser, and retired in 2005. Richard was an avid folklorist, stamp collector, and model train enthusiast, and was well loved and respected by all who knew him.

He recently celebrated 50 wonderful years with his wife and children with a cruise to Alaska. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Eugene and Herman. He is survived by his wife, his daughter, Jennifer Hunter (Shane) of Parma, OH, his son, Daniel Gill, of Bowling Green, OH, his brother, Michael, of Northport, FL, and three grandchildren, Zachary, Kara, and Colin Hunter.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday May 5, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 West Main St. Portage, Ohio 43451. Rev. Maurice Dunn will officiate. Military honors will be rendered by the Wood County Honor Detail. Visitation will be held Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m.
