OTR Smokehouse was handing out free hot food Friday evening, while it lasted, outside the Brown Bag Food Project office at 530 Sand Ridge Road, Bowling Green.
The smokehouse is a regular donor to Brown Bag, said Amy Jeffords, a board member. They will provide vacuum packed smoked meats that can be given to clients. “They’re very generous.”
Jody Beckford, who does the smoking and owns the business with his wife Victoria said he prefers to give away the excess food while its still good than throwing away.
The couple has even considered doing their own project similar to Heavenly Pizza in Findlay where customers can donate a few slices of pizza from their owners for the shop to give away.
They appreciate that Brown Bag doesn’t require the paperwork other pantries do. They have an elderly friend who benefits from the service. They also contribute to St. Thomas More and BG Christian Food Pantry.
Beckford said when he was young he remembers waiting for the box of surplus food to show up on the doorstep.
