The Toledo Museum of Art is offering a series of special events and programs this summer, and many are related to the exhibition The Berlin Painter and His World: Athenian Vase-Painting in the Early Fifth Century B.C. while it is on view July 8-Oct. 1.
Those activities really get rolling with a Community Block Party on the museum grounds, Saturday evening , July 8.
FREE Special Events and Activities
Play Space
June 27-Sept. 3, Museum Grounds
The Museum’s youngest visitors are invited again to explore TMA’s popular Play Space on the lawn just west of the main Museum. The outdoor Play Space features musical instruments, big blue blocks and interactive Elements of Play games. Designed by youth from TMA’s Teen Apprentice program and The Arts Commission’s YAAW Alumni, with artist Laura Amtower, the Elements of Playincludes three unique games inspired by visual language and childhood memories.
Children and their caregivers will be encouraged to play together. Play Staff will be on duty Tuesday–Sunday from 12-4 p.m. from June 27-Aug. 13. From Aug. 19-Sept. 3, Play Space will be staffed Saturday and Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the Elements of Play games and musical instruments throughout museum hours: Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, Noon to 5 p.m.
TMA Block Party

Celebrate summer with thousands of party-goers and enjoy entertainment, food and music purveyors during the Museum’s fourth annual block party. The festivities are spread out across Monroe Street, which will be closed to traffic, and coincide with the opening of the special exhibition The Berlin Painter and His World, a display of ancient Athenian vase painting. With the season’s focus on the art of Greece, expect inspiration for the Block Party’s food, dance and music to come from across the Atlantic. Opa! Parking is free for members and $7 for nonmembers. Exhibitions
Kara Walker, Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated)

Widely known for her radical engagement with issues of race, gender and sexuality, Kara Walker is one of the most successful and celebrated artists today. Her print series Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated) (2005) was recently acquired by TMA. It features 15 of the artist’s signature black silhouette figures in silkscreen layered over enlarged wood engravings of Civil War scenes taken from Harper’s Pictorial History, first published in 1866. By uniting her contemporary re-imagining of events from an African-American perspective with the historical record, Walker creates a powerful visual statement that challenges the conventional one-sided textbook account of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. This exhibition is supported in part by the H. L. Thompson, Jr. Family Fund and the Ohio Arts Council.
The Berlin Painter and His World: Athenian Vase-Painting in the Early Fifth Century B.C.

This touring exhibition of ancient Athenian vase-painting, organized by the Princeton University Art Museum, focuses on the art and career of the anonymous artist known as the Berlin Painter. Eighty-four vessels and statuettes of bronze and terracotta from the early fifth century B.C. will be shown, including dozens of the finest vases attributed to the Berlin Painter along with works by other extraordinary artists of the period. The masterpieces are on loan from 15 museums and two private collections, including the British Museum; Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the J. Paul Getty Museum; the Vatican’s Museo Gregoriano Etrusco and the Musée du Louvre. The painted subjects range from athletics and musical performances to the rich body of Greek myth and epic.
The Berlin Painter and His World: Athenian Vase-Painting in the Early Fifth Century B.C. has been organized by the Princeton University Art Museum. Major support for this exhibition has been provided by the Leon Levy Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The Toledo showing is made possible in part by 2017 Exhibition Program Sponsor ProMedica and an anonymous donor, with additional support from Christies, Jim and Gregory Demirjian, and Taylor Cadillac, as well as generous gifts received in memory of Kurt Luckner. Admission is free for members and students, $10 for nonmembers.

In this multi-sensory presentation, musicologist Eftychia Papanikolaou of Bowling Green State University will discuss the music of ancient Greece through an exploration of the roles, functions and symbolism of the musical instruments depicted in the work of the Berlin Painter.

Sanchita Balachandran, Associate Director, Johns Hopkins Archaeological Museum, discusses the 2,500-year-old enigma of how ancient Greek potters and painters developed the artistically and technologically superior corpus of objects known as red-figure ceramics.
Great Performances: Oracle Hysterical, Hecuba

Self-described “part band, part book group,” the music ensemble Oracle Hysterical will perform their adaptation of Hecuba, Euripides’ blood-soaked tale of love, loss, murder, revenge, and the Trojan War.

Digital Photography

In this introductory class, students will learn the basics of using a digital camera including composition and practicing ways to creatively enhance images. Original compositions will be created using the Museum’s galleries and buildings as part of the setting. Cameras are provided in class.
Interactive Electronic Art

July 17-21: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
In collaboration with Bowling Green State University, join us for an opportunity to create interactive electronic art at TMA. Students will learn how to program microcontrollers through hands-on lab exercises creating simple machines with embodied behaviors. The skills and concepts taught in this course will be presented using an interdisciplinary approach which merges practices in arts and technology. Students will spend Monday through Thursday at TMA then take a field trip to the BGSU campus on Friday for a tour of the robotics lab, transportation provided. Students will have a break for lunch but must bring their own food and drinks.

This two-day workshop will introduce participants to the possibilities of the torch. Saturday will focus on learning the most basic elements of flameworking by becoming familiar with the torches, tools and glass while creating beads. On Sunday, after a short tour in the galleries, students will make sculptural pendants and other small objects of their desire. No experience necessary.
