Toledo Museum opens Monday to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special programs

The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will open as a space for respite and reflection in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 16 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In reverence of the iconic “I Have a Dream” speech, TMA will offer various programs that connect to the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the speech that took place 60 years ago at the march on Washington.

Admission to the Museum is free.
Parking is free for members and $10 for non-members.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

11 a.m.-5 p.m.
Film: Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream Speech” in Libbey Court
King’s speech will loop on a TV screen in Libbey Court.

11 a.m.-5 p.m.
The family center will offer hands-on art activities to explore and create unique works of art inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and his message. This free program is designed for young children and their grown-ups. Each session includes supplies. Registration is available at the visitor experience desks.

12:10-12:25 p.m.
Performance: The Voices at BGSU in Libbey Court
Bowling Green State University’s (BGSU) student-led concert choir The Voices will kick off Martin Luther King Jr. Day at TMA with the performance of two music selections deeply rooted in the history of Negro spirituals.

12:30-1 p.m.
Lecture: “60 Years Later!” with Calvin Burney Jr. in the Little Theater
This chronological lecture takes a look back on Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech. Calvin Burney Jr. is the superintendent of Rise and Shine Academy, a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., chair of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast and the inaugural and current chair of the Alpha Esquires Mentoring Program that is dedicated to enriching and empowering the lives of African American males in Northwest Ohio.

1-3 p.m.
Film: “Selma” in the Little Theater
The Academy-Award-winning movie “Selma” chronicles the epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Ala. during the 1965 Civil Rights Movement. The film is directed by Ava DuVernay and stars David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jr.

2-3 p.m.
Family-friendly MLK Day tours meet in Herrick Lobby
This interactive and engaging docentled tour features works from African American artists and of the African Diaspora located throughout the TMA collection. Start in Herrick Lobby and end in Libbey Court where Martin Luther King Jr.’s“I Have a Dream” speech will be playing on a screen.

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s unbounded spirit of dreaming with a dynamic mixed media art project based on artist Aminah Robinson’s collection of books in the Ragmud Collection. Listen to the words of Martin Luther King Jr. and look through the vibrant storytelling in the Ragmud Collection. Afterward, use the words as a motivation to create mixed media storybooks.

“I Have a Dream” Copper Cuff Bracelets Workshop (Ages 10-15)
Artist: Holly Strawbridge
Explore the power of words through Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech while making a beautiful copper cuff bracelet. Stamp your own meaning into metal with hammers and letter stamps and create a wearable piece of art that carries a powerful personal message. Learn basic metalsmithing and jewelry skills in this easy-to-understand and rewarding project-based class.

Dream Big Printmaking Workshop (Ages 12-18)
