‘We Are Water Protectors’ wins Caldecott Medal

The Mock Caldecott voting at the Wood County District Public Library picked the winner.

The American Library Association named “We Are Water Protectors,” illustrated by Michaela Goade as the 2021 Caldecott Medal winner. The medal is the most prestigious honor in children’s book illustration.The book was written by Carole Lindstrom and published by Roaring Brook Press.

Goade, an enrolled member of the Tlingit & Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska, is the first indigenous artist to win the award.

For the past several years, the district library has hosted a Mock Caldecott event. They named “Water Protectors” their winner.

Also, “Outside In,” illustrated by Cindy Derby, written by Deborah Underwood and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, was one of the books selected by the local group as an Honor book.

The Caldecott Medal is one a number of Youth Media Awards announced by ALA this morning. Those included the John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature which was won by “When You Trap a Tiger,” written by Tae Keller, published by Random House Children’s Books.
