Wood County District Public Library to offer tree talk with urban forester, Monday, May 11
The city of Bowling Green has been an Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA award winner for 45 years. On Monday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m., the Wood County District Public Library will present Adrien Lowien-Kirian, Bowling Green’s urban forester, for a talk about working with people’s own trees. Lowien-Kirian will cover the best practices for planting new trees, caring for the trees already planted, and monitoring trees for pests and disease.
For those interested in learning more about the BG Tree Canopy Project, Lowien-Kirian will discuss some of that program and how people can support it as well.

Wood County Park District will host “Chair Yoga in the Parks” on Monday, May 11, and Monday, May 18, from 5 – 5:45 p.m., at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve in the Hankison Great Room, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg.
Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga practiced using a chair on top of a mat. It is designed to make yoga accessible to individuals with limited mobility or those who have difficulty standing for extended periods.

Wood County Park District will host “Mat Yoga in the Parks” on Monday, May 11, and Monday, May 18, from 6 – 7 p.m., at W.W. Knight Nature Preserve in the Hankison Great Room, 29530 White Road, Perrysburg.
The community is invited to join Glory Meyer this season for an all-levels yoga practice at the nature preserve. This practice will be a combination of standing poses and poses on the mat.

Wood County Park District will host a book club reading of “Their Eyes Were Watching God,” by Zora Neale on Tuesday, May 12, from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., at Carter Historic Farm in the Loomis Community Room, 18331 Carter Road, Bowling Green.
“Their Eyes Were Watching God” is a Harlem Renaissance classic. Written in just seven weeks and listed as one of “Time” magazine’s 100 best English-language novels published since 1923, this is Neale’s best known and possibly most loved work.

BG Rotary Club meeting to feature Kristin Otley, BG Parks & Recreation director, Thursday, May 7
Bowling Green’s Parks & Recreation Director Kristin Otley will visit with Rotarians on Thursday, May 7, and bring the membership up-to-date on the city’s spring and summer programs and activities.
Otley has served as director of Parks & Recreation for the past 11 years and has been with the city for more than 29 years.

With so many kayak options today, choosing the right one can be a dizzying experience. In this interactive workshop, people will investigate the differences in kayaks and learn what should be taken into consideration.

The Wood Soil and Water Conservation District will host a pond clinic on Thursday, May 7, from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at Bradner Preserve, 11491 Fostoria Road, Bradner. Light refreshments will be provided.
Ed Kwietniewski, certified lake manager/limnologist with Aqua Doc Lake and Pond Management, will discuss residential pond management and offer a question and answer session.

Toledo Opera, WCDPL present ‘The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish’ for free, Friday, May 8
What happens if a young bear is eager to catch their first fish, but they can’t remember how? In this 45-minute, high-energy adaptation of a Lakota legend, Toledo Opera tells the story of Mato, a bear who lives in the Great Lakes on the first day of spring. “The Bear Who Couldn’t Fish” will be presented on Friday, May 8, at 10 a.m., at the Wood County District Public Library, 251 N. Main St., Bowling Green.
The opera tells the story of Mato as he journeys through the forests surrounding the Great Lakes. As he wanders, he encounters a variety of animal friends who teach him about fishing and the ecosystems of the Great Lakes region. This original opera blends storytelling with scientific education, introducing young audiences to concepts like aquatic habitats, biodiversity, and environmental stewardship.
The event is free and open to the public, and no registration is required.

BG Urban Forestry Division to offer workshop on proper mulching techniques, Saturday, May 9
Mulch is a vital part of maintaining healthy trees in the urban forest. The community is invited to join the Urban Forestry Division to learn proper mulching techniques and practice hands-on learning through volunteering. The Urban Forest Arboretum was established in 2008 to display the different types of trees that residents may plant on their property or can be planted in the tree lawns. In order to properly showcase the trees, volunteers are needed to help mulch the 86 trees that are featured.
People can join the division on Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. – noon, at the Bowling Green Urban Forest Arboretum, 1060 Pearl St. Volunteers are to meet at the Arboretum Kiosk near the southwest corner of the fire station and arboretum. Parking is available at the Bowling Green Fire Station on Pearl Street and Peace Lutheran Church, just east of the fire station and arboretum.
Participants will spend 30 minutes learning the importance of proper mulching, and why improper mulching around trees can be so damaging. The remainder of the workshop will include hands-on practice with the trees in the arboretum.

BG Area Community Bands to host free concert, ‘Visions of America,’ Sunday, May 10
The Bowling Green Area Community Bands invites the community to its free concert on Sunday, May 10, “Visions of America: Connection Points,” in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
The concert will be held at 4 p.m. at the Bowling Green Performing Arts Center located at 540 W. Poe Road. Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. The event and parking are free and open to the public. Due to construction, attendees are asked to enter from Poe Road and follow directions to the parking lot on the northwest side of campus.

St. Mark’s to host drive-thru chicken barbecue, Saturday, May 16
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 315 S. College Dr., Bowling Green, will host its annual spring chicken barbecue on Saturday, May 16, at 5 p.m. Chicken dinners will be available until they are sold out. Children’s Resource Center to host free ‘Hop Into Summer’ event, Saturday, May 16
Children’s Resource Center will host its free annual “Hop Into Summer” event on Saturday, May 16, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., at the Kiwanis Memorial picnic shelter at City Park, 520 Conneaut Ave., Bowling Green. There will be a cookout, yard games, activities for all ages, raffle prizes, and community resources available. The 2026 event is made special by celebrating Mental Health Awareness month and CRC’s 50 years of service.

Waterville Historical Society to present program on local architectural legacy, Wednesday, May 20
The community is invited to explore the places that have created Waterville’s iconic “look,” while traveling back in time to witness the development of Waterville’s significant architectural legacy. Attendees can hear the stories of the people who decided to leave their mark on Waterville in the days gone bye.
Speaker Julia Wiley will present “In the Eye of the Beholder: Waterville’s Architectural Legacy” on Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m., at Wakeman Hall, 401 Farnsworth Road, Waterville.
The program will also include a short tutorial on the National Register process and its advantages and disadvantages for property owners and the community.
Wood County District Public Library to host ‘house history hunt’ throughout May
People that would like to learn more about their house or another property in the area are invited to the Wood County District Public Library. During the month of May, the library’s “house history hunt” will walk people through the process of researching properties.
The library will have worksheets available that guide participants through some of the basic steps in the process.
“A property’s history can be a bit of a mystery, but I also think that’s where the fun lies,” said Local Historian Librarian Marnie Pratt. “We hope this event will make people feel like a property detective.”
Property searches usually involve using the Wood County Auditor’s website, visiting the Recorder’s Office at the courthouse, and visiting the library’s local history collection.
Participation worksheets can be picked up at the second floor information desk from May 1 – 31. No registration is required and the worksheets are to keep as people explore properties at their own pace.

Wood County District Public Library’s bookmobile adds new stop on BGSU campus, Tuesdays
A new bookmobile stop has been added in Bowling Green, thanks to a partnership between BGSU’s Jerome Library and the Wood County District Public Library. The second Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m., the WCDPL bookmobile will roll into Parking Lot N, next to Jerome Library, bringing popular reading materials for the entire campus community.
The bookmobile will offer popular best-sellers in fiction and nonfiction, a selection of youth materials, and staff can fill requests at the next visit. This new bookmobile stop will serve students on campus, or staff and faculty who might want to visit before leaving campus for the day. Patrons who visit the bookmobile can also use the library located at 251 N. Main St. in Bowling Green.
The next visit to Parking Lot N on BGSU’s campus will be Tuesday, May 12, at 4 p.m.
Friday morning birding returns to Wintergarden
Bowling Green Parks and Recreation has announced the return of the Friday morning birding program this spring. The community is invited to join the volunteer naturalists of Bowling Green Parks & Recreation every Friday from April 10 to May 15 at 8 a.m. for a casual birding hike at Wintergarden/St. John’s Nature Preserve.
Adult bird watchers of all ability levels are welcome, and binoculars and field guides will be available for those who need them. Each hike will last up to an hour and a half, and no pre-registration is required. People may come to one hike or all of them as schedules allow.
Participants are asked to wear weather appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes for walking on the trails. Regardless of weather, watchers will still flock together.

The BG Free Store take place at Howard’s Club H, 210 N. Main St., Bowling Green, and offers clothing, food, toiletries, books, kitchen items, and more for free. The store sets up on the third Thursday of every month from 6 – 9:30 p.m.

Bowling Green flea market returns monthly
The Bowling Green flea market is a one-weekend-per-month event, September through May. The event has been part of the Bowling Green community for approximately 54 years.
Taking place at Wood County fairgrounds, there are two buildings, Junior Fair and Champions buildings, with vendors and also outside vendors, weather permitting. Parking and admission are always free.
Vendors sell jewelry, crystals, antiques, coins, toys, comics, birdhouses, crafts, ephemera, rock and mineral specimens, fossils, video games, Pokémon, military items, sports items, Tupperware, and more.

Fiber Friends is a social program that meets every week to chat and create. People of all skill levels are welcome. Even if someone has never picked up knitting needles or a crochet hook, they can learn the basics to get started on their newest hobby.

Just Baby ‘N Me is a lap-sit storytime ideal for babies. This unique storytime will be on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m.in The Children’s Place at the Bowling Green Library.
This lap-sit storytime is great for babies from birth through early walkers (12 months). The focus during storytime is on rhymes, songs, finger plays, and exploring short books together, and is meant to facilitate interaction between you and your baby to develop their language and early literacy skills.
