From WOOD COUNTY PROSECUTOR
Throughout July and August, Wood County Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn and Prosecuting Attorney Paul Dobson will present “Frauds and Scams: Spot Them and Stop Them” at the county’s senior centers. Their first stop was on July 1, when they presented to more than 20 seniors in Rossford on staying safe from scammers.
In the internet world of social media, AI, and other new technologies, there is potential for advancements in all areas of people’s lives, from communication to medicine. However, they also pose dangers. Fraudsters and thieves are looking for new ways to separate citizens from their money or personal information. Their attacks can be sophisticated and pull on heartstrings, play on fear, or trick people into confusion.
Anyone can fall victim to an online, text, or telephone scam. Scammers can be tricky and intimidating. Learning their methods and angles will help people avoid turning over their money or private information to a bad actor.
Wasylyshyn and Dobson have years of experience coordinating efforts to combat and respond to scams. In their careers, they have seen the rise of internet fraud, from the early days of eBay scams to the more recent cryptocurrency and government impersonation scams. The community is invited to join Wasylyshyn and Dobson as they discuss some of the tactics that bad actors will use to try and scare or trick folks into turning over their funds. They will share ways to spot these scams and safety tips for protecting oneself.
