David Sanderson, 74, of Cygnet, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly at home on January 27, 2026.
Born April 17, 1951, in Hardin County Ohio, David grew up in Ada and Kenton. He spent his youth working on cars at his father’s service station and playing in a rock band. David valued education and hard work, putting himself through undergraduate and graduate studies at Bowling Green State University while working nights welding axles at Rockwell.
David spent over 25 years with General Mills, serving in various leadership roles including Director of Human Resources and Distance Learning. He founded Applied Technetronics, where he created apprenticeship software and consulted for Fortune 500 companies. His work ethic reflected his lifelong commitment to education and continuous improvement.
Known for being funny, outgoing, and dependable, David was always ready with a joke and equally ready to help, whether by fixing something or sharing knowledge. As the father of two daughters, he emphasized that they could do anything they set their minds to, teaching life skills, problem-solving, and the importance of education.
He shared 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Carla Sanderson (Schwyn). Together they built homes in Cygnet and Mackinac Island, MI, restored multi-generational buildings, barns, vehicles, and founded Sanderson Stables.
In retirement, David devoted himself to his grandchildren, maintaining his farm, growing hay, time on Mackinac Island, and new business ideas. Becoming a grandfather brought him such joy. He lit up when he was with Carlie and Charlotte and was happiest simply being around them. He stopped by often, sometimes just to return Tupperware, say hi, or dropping off something forgotten at the store. He showed up, again and again, always finding a way to make Carlie and Charlotte laugh.
He is survived by his wife Carla; daughters Rachel Donley (Erick) and Jessica Sanderson (Lauren); grandchildren Charlotte Donley and Carlie Sanderson; and was preceded in death by his sister, Joyce Lynn (Sanderson) Heilshorn, brother, George H Sanderson Jr., and parents George H Sr and Betty Lou (Kelly) Sanderson.
David will be remembered for his humor, ambition, work ethic, and as the best grandpa ever by his grandchildren Carlie and Charlotte.
Visitation for David will be held on Tuesday, Feb 3, 2025 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home, Bowling Green. A private burial will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery.
Contribution in David’s honor may be gifted to the family to go toward his grandchildren’s college funds.
