Virginia glass sculpture artist Grant Garmezy will share his techniques for sculpting animals in glass during a one-week glass art master class at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) Aug. 12-16. Experience with glassblowing is required for this class.
Garmezy’s class will explore the special techniques and approaches to solid and blown sculpting that can take glass sculpture to the next level by demonstrating the range and freedom the material has and showing its true potential.
“We will bring sculptures to life using a variety of torches and sculpting techniques, which include solid sculpting, inside sculpting, bit building, color application, garage use, and most importantly teamwork,” Garmezy said. “Problem solving will be emphasized and students are encouraged to bring in images of forms you are interested in recreating.”
Garmezy received a bachelor of fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University and has taught worldwide including in South Korea, Swaziland, Scotland, Japan, Norway, Greece, Belgium, Spain, and Murano, Italy.
His class is one in a series of glass master classes the Museum is hosting through August 2019. The glass master classes run one week, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with lunch provided. Each week-long class costs $950 for Museum members and $1,000 for nonmembers.
