Families are invited to meet author/illustrator Melissa Sweet on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Wood County District Public Library Atrium. Melissa Sweet has written and illustrated nearly 100 books.
She has won several awards for her wonderfully unique illustrations, most notably a Caldecott Honor in 2009 for A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams in 2016, and another Caldecott Honor in 2015 for The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus, both of which were written by Jen Bryant. This year Melissa Sweet was selected to illustrate a poster to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Children’s Book Week. Children’s Book Week was launched in 1919 to be a yearly celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading.
Melissa Sweet will be visiting with BGHS Senior Art Studio students during her visit, to talk to them about the process of illustration. The students have made artwork reflecting Melissa Sweet’s art style, which are available to view in the front display window of the Wood County District Public Library as well as in the Children’s Place through to her visit Thursday, November 7th at 7:00 pm.
Books will be available for sale at the November 7th event, made possible through the Friends of the Library, which can be purchased and autographed by Melissa Sweet.
Titles for sale include: Pinky and Rex and the Just Right Pet by James Howe, You Nest Here With Me by Jane Yolen, Little Red Writing by Joan Holub, Some Writer: The Story of E.B. White by Melissa Sweet, Christmas Tree and Hanukkah Lights by David Martin, Won’t You Be My Kissaroo? by Joanne Ryder, and How to Read a Book by Kwame Alexander.
