Heather Fallis, BG Middle School librarian, and eighth grade science teacher Melanie Ferguson are spearheading an initiative to recycle the eclipse glasses after the solar eclipse on Monday. Bowling Green City Schools is working with Astronomers Without Borders (AWB) to be a collection hub for eclipse glasses recycling.
Any eclipse glasses that are still in good condition (without scratches, punctures, or torn) can be dropped off at any Bowling Green Schools location starting on Tuesday, April 9. Community members can also bring them to the Astro Expo on April 23 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Bowling Green Middle School.
Used glasses will also be collected at the BGSU Eclipse Watch Party in the stadium.
The glasses will be vetted for reusability and distributed when there is another eclipse elsewhere. They will be sent to those who need them for outreach and educational programs around the world, to bring eclipse glasses to people who may not otherwise have a safe way to view the eclipse directly.
AWB has been sending solar glasses for annular and total solar eclipses worldwide since 2008. The AWB has distributed hundreds of thousands of recycled glasses worldwide.
