From SCIENCE CAFES BGSU
“Puberty and the Brain” will be the focus of the next BGSU Science Café. The hybrid event will be presented in-person at Juniper Brewing Company, 145 S Main St, Bowling Green, as well as virtually, Tuesday, April 16, 6-7 p.m.
Dr. Jari Willing, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and J.P. Scott Center for Neuroscience at BGSU, will be the featured speaker. Willing’s research focuses on the effects of environmental toxicants on brain development and behavior, and the role for hormones in brain development during the perinatal period and adolescence.
Adolescence, broadly defined as the transition from childhood to adulthood, is associated with numerous changes in the brain and behavior. This is also a period during which many psychiatric disorders tend to manifest. Emerging evidence suggests that within the adolescence period, the onset of puberty may be the critical catalyst for changes in the brain that rapidly alter behavior, making some more susceptible to psychiatric illness.
The Science Café is sponsored by the BGSU Division of Research and Economic Engagement.
