BGSU’s uptick in COVID cases attributed to household spread

BGSU reported an uptick in new COVID-19 cases in numbers reported Wednesday (4-6-2022).

The university reported 14 new cases – 12 students and two faculty.  That’s up from five cases reported last week.

Speaking to Faculty Senate Tuesday, Chief Health and Wellness Officer Ben Batey attributed the increase to cases spreading among roommates, both on and off campus. Five of the infected students lived off -campus and seven lived in residence halls.

That’s something typically seen in families, he said. One person tests positive, and that leads everyone else in the household to get tested, and they test positive.

The university now has three students isolated in campus housing.

At this point, Batey said BGSU has more widespread testing than in the community.

Nationwide more testing is self-administered at home, and this complicates  tracking those cases since it is up to people to report their own results.

Since the start of the semester on Jan. 10, BGSU has reported 715 cases – 637 students, 24 faculty, and 54 staff.
