‘Blue Lou’ Marini to visit BGSU to perform & teach

Saxophonist “Blue Lou” Marini will visit Bowling Green for a three-day residency capped by a performance with BGSU Wind Symphony and Jazz Lab Band I Friday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. Kobacker Hall, Moore Musical Arts Center on the BGSU campus
Marini visit is part of the 2022 Hansen Musical Arts Series.

While in Bowling Green Marini is scheduled to work with the Bowling Green High School jazz band as well as conducting several sessions with university musicians.

Often referred to as an “unsung jazz hero,” platinum recording artist, Marini, Jr. is the seasoned soul and adept multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, educator, and producer credited with inspiring the origins of a fan-following cult across multiple genres of music. He’s best known as a member of several distinguished bands: Woody Herman Orchestra, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Frank Zappa, Saturday Night Live Band, The Blues Brothers, and many others.

With the Wind Symphony he will be the soloist on his own composition “Condition Blue.” With the Jazz Lab I his set will include two of his originals “Hip Pickles,” recorded by Blood, Sweat, and Tears, and “Klong” as well as “Blue Lou,” written by Donald Fagen of Steely Dan for the film “Glengarry Ross.”
Lou Marini, Jr. is the son of Lou Marini, Sr. who taught at Bowling Green State University for 15 years. In addition to teaching woodwinds and arranging and conducting the BGSU Jazz band, Marini, Sr. wrote more than 180 arrangements for the Falcon Marching Band.
