Community bands to celebrate American Heritage

From BOWLING GREEN AREA COMMUNITY BANDS

The Bowing Green Area Community Bands, present a free American Heritage concert on Sunday, March 22 at 4 p.m., at the Bowling Green Schools Performing Arts Center, 530 West Poe Road. Doors open at 3:30 p.m.
Join the bands as they celebrate our history and heritage through the music of Duke Ellington, John Philip Sousa, and more.

Under the baton of Catherine Lewis, the concert band will perform selections including Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”; Jay Dawson’s “Gettysburg: The Third Day” (a tone poem describing the battle); Randall Standridge’s “The Nine” (written in honor of the Little Rock Central Nine and the 60th anniversary of the integration of the Little Rock school system); and John Philip Sousa’s “The Liberty Bell. “

The bands will welcome guest vocalists Richard Lewis, baritone, and Anna Singer, soprano, on several pieces including Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein’s “Ol’ Man River,” as well as Irving Berlin’s “Anything You Can Do” and a medley, “Irving Berlin’s America.”

BiG Band BG, under the direction of William E. Lake, will present three of Duke Ellington’s classic tunes: “In a Sentimental Mood,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” and “Flirtibird,” the latter featuring alto saxophone soloist Dan Schellhas.
