The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) will screen the documentary film Kusama: Infinity (2018) Friday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater. Tickets are $5 for Museum members, $7 for nonmembers and $4 for students and military.

Directed by filmmaker Heather Lenz, Kusama: Infinity explores artist Yayoi Kusama’s journey from a conservative upbringing in Japan to her brush with fame in America during the 1960s, where she rivaled Andy Warhol for press attention and concludes with the international fame she has finally achieved within the art world. Now in her 90s, Kusama has spent the last 30 years living in a mental institution in Japan.

“For those who have experienced her work either at TMA or elsewhere, this beautifully-crafted documentary is an opportunity to learn more about Yayoi Kusama’s creative process as well as the obstacles she faced in her career,” said Scott Boberg, TMA’s manager of programs and audience engagement.

On view at TMA through April 26, Yayoi Kusama: Fireflies on the Water brings to Toledo the unique vision of one of the world’s most influential contemporary artists. Yayoi Kusama, who experienced hallucinations as a child, uses her artwork as a means to express and communicate her particular psychological world.

Visitors will experience up to 60 seconds alone in the room, which uses lights, mirrors and water to transport viewers to a space that seems endlessly expansive. This site-specific installation is made possible through a generous loan from the Whitney Museum of Art.

General admission tickets for Fireflies on the Water are $5 and Museum members are able to reserve a set amount of tickets, free of charge, based on their level of membership. Reservations can be done online at tickets.toledomuseum.org each Monday beginning at 10 a.m. EST for any tickets that are available that week and will continue until they sell out.
