During its first meeting of the year, the Wood County Park District Board welcomed two new members who share a love of the outdoors.

Rebecca Ferguson and Wendy Headley, both of Bowling Green, were selected to serve on the board by Wood County Probate Judge David Woessner. In announcing their appointments to the board, the judge noted Ferguson’s and Headley’s decades of administrative and business experience.

Both women also have a history of strong public service as is evident by their participation in numerous boards, commissions and community events, Woessner noted.

But best of all, they both appreciate green spaces and how they are made available to the public.

“I really have a passion about parks,” Ferguson said. “I think they’re really important in today’s world.”

Ferguson, who is a regular visitor to national and state parks, said she is interested in focusing on parks in her backyard.

“It’s wonderful to see how Wood County uses its green spaces,” she said. “I am honored to serve.”

Headley also has a history of camping and visiting national parks, with her children and grandchildren involved in Scouting.

It’s just in my soul, to be in nature,” she said. “We need this green space.”

When being interviewed by Woessner for the board position, Headley explained her commitment.

“I told Dave it’s time to give back,” she said.

Both women were welcomed by experienced board members Sandy Wiechman, Tom Myers and Bill Cameron. They new members were encouraged to ask questions and offer their opinions freely.

Ferguson and Headley assured the board that they would not be shy.

“Wendy and I together – look out,” Ferguson said with a grin.

Their terms will continue through Dec. 31, 2025.

“Their commitment to the parks along with their combined extensive experience in business and community affairs will benefit the Wood County Park District and all of its users in the upcoming years,” Woessner said.

In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, Myers was elected board president and Wiechman was elected vice president.

“We do have some gems here in Wood County,” Myers said, referring to the county’s parks. And one of the board’s jobs is to get the word out to the public.

Also at the meeting, the head of the Friends of the Wood County Parks said the organization will focus on member involvement this year, promoting projects such as:

  • Sponsoring hogs for the annual festival at the Carter Historic Farm.
  • Working at a hot cocoa stand at an upcoming wintertime event.
  • Replacing older benches.
  • Helping with lunches during staff workdays.
  • Working on the spring plant sale.
