Melissa Harris-Perry, television host, political commentator and professor, will present “Power of the Word: Language, Voice and the Legacy of King in Our Work” Feb. 19.
Harris-Perry’s presentation is part of Bowling Green State University’s annual “Beyond the Dream” series, which provides a variety of opportunities to share in the multicultural experience.
Harris-Perry hosted the “Melissa Harris-Perry Show” on MSNBC from 2012 to 2016; is the founding director of the Anna Julia Cooper Project on Gender, Race and Politics in the South; and is a professor at Wake Forest University in Politics and International Affairs. In addition to serving as a columnist for The Nation magazine, she wrote “Barbershops, Bibles, and BET: Everyday Talk and Black Political Thought,” which won the 2005 W.E.B. Du Bois Book Award from the National Conference of Black Political Scientists, and “Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.”
The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. Entry is free; however, registration is encouraged. On-site registration will be available as space allows.
Additional speakers throughout the spring semester include Seale, political activist and founding chairman/national organizer of the Black Panther party; Ruben Angel, public speaker and socio-cultural critic; and Blake Leeper, Paralympic athlete and motivational speaker.
Additional Beyond the Dream events include the Women of Color Leadership Summit, Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Not in Our Town Interfaith Breakfast and Lavender, Latino/a/x and Black graduations.
