WBGU-PBS and Bowling Green Parks & Recreation will host the Hometown Heroes & Helpers Fun Fest and Obstacle Course, a free public event Sunday, Oct. 9 from 1-4 p.m. at the Bowling Green Community Center, 1245 W. Newton Road.

The family-friendly event is designed to celebrate those who serve our community in a festival atmosphere with games, activities, crafts and an obstacle course run.

Several community organizations are taking part in the activities including Bowling Green Fire, Bowling Green Police, United States Army, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Girl Scouts, Rotary Club of Bowling Green, Wood County Hospital and the Wood County District Public Library.

WBGU’s mascot Ruby the Red-Eyed Tree Frog will hand out T-shirts, children’s books and other goodies while supplies last.

Military members (current and past), first responders, teachers, health care workers and other public servants are invited to be recognized at a brief ceremony at the event prior to the obstacle course run at 3 p.m.

The outdoor obstacle course run is open to all ages (preschoolers to senior citizens) and consists of more than a dozen obstacles including tunnels, balance beams, climbing walls and mud trenches. Runners have the option to by-pass any obstacle.

A preview of the obstacle course is available at wbgu.org/hometown-heroes-and-helpers/. The festival and obstacle course run will happen rain or shine.

Festival activities will move inside if there is inclement weather.

This event is supported in part by an Ohio Learns 360 grant to Ohio PBS stations from the Ohio Department of Education. Ohio Learns 360 activities are designed to accelerate learning for students in grades K-5. For more information, visit ohiolearns360.org.
