TAPA celebrates Christmas in song, symphonic sounds, ballet, & jazz

The Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts is tapping into all its parts to celebrate the holidays.

The holiday performances feature orchestra, choirs, ballet, and jazz.

The schedule includes:

  • Christmas at the Peristyle, Saturday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m.  Vocalist, pianist and composer Tony DeSare  brings his fresh take on old school classics to Christmas at the Peristyle with the Toledo Symphony conducted by Alain Trudel
  • Handel’s ‘Messiah,’ Sunday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. at Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd, Toledo. Th2 Toledo Symphony conducted by Trudel with soloists Pascale Beaudin, soprano, Meridian Prall, mezzo-soprano, Brian Skoog, tenor, and Sam Handley, bass-baritone. Handel’s Messiah has been described as “a commentary on Jesus Christ’s Nativity, Passion, Resurrection, and Ascension beginning with God’s promises as spoken by the prophets and ending the Christ’s glorification in heaven.” 
  • “The Nutcracker,” Saturday, Dec. 9, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, 2 p.m. at the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo. Now in its 83rd year, Toledo Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker continues to hold the record for the longest running production in North America. Toledo Ballet Artistic Director Eric Otto uses his own choreographic magic to bring this timeless holiday tale to life. Toledo Ballet’s Nutcracker is the only Nutcracker in the region performed with live orchestra – the Toledo Symphony with Alain Trudel conducting. “The Nutcracker” will feature Houston Ballet principal dancers Yuriko Kajiya and Connor Walsh in the iconic roles of Sugar Plum Fairy and Cavalier. 
  • “A Swingin’ Christmas Returns,” Saturday, Dec. 16, 8 p.m. at the Toledo Museum of Art Peristyle. Directed by Andrew Bishop, a versatile saxophonist, clarinetist, flautist, composer, improviser, educator, and scholar, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra offers its jazzy take on holiday classic.  Toledo native and jazz vocalist April Varner will join the band as  guest soloist. She  recently released her debut EP entitled “Hummingbird” available on all streaming services. 
  • Toledo Symphony Neighborhood Concert: Christmas in Fostoria, Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. in St. Wendelin Church, 323 N Wood St. Call (419) 435-6692 for tickets and information.
