In response, the artistic staff created Opera Cabaret as a platform to fully showcase the chorus – a group regarded as the heart of Toledo Opera.

Comprised of regional and local professional singers, the Toledo Opera chorus plays a role in bringing each mainstage production to life. These dedicated artists contribute their time and talent to the company. Opera Cabaret offers them the opportunity to shine in a more intimate setting, while also deepening connections with the community through varied vocal selections and engaging performances.

Toledo Opera to present ‘The Three Little Pigs’ for free at Epworth United Methodist Church, Sunday, Nov. 8

Toledo Opera invites the public to a free community performance of “The Three Little Pigs” on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 4 p.m., at Epworth United Methodist Church, 4855 W. Central Ave., Toledo. The performance will be followed by a cookies-and-punch reception and a meet-and-greet with the artists. All are welcome to attend.

“The Three Little Pigs” is an original retelling of the classic folk tale based on scenes and music from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s operas, adapted by John Davies. “The Three Little Pigs” is presented as the 2026-27 production of Toledo Opera’s award-winning Opera on Wheels program, a 40-year educational outreach initiative that brings live opera directly to schools and community venues across northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan. Each year, Opera on Wheels reaches more than 20,000 students with age-appropriate productions that introduce new audiences to the art form.

This year’s production tells the story of siblings, Don Giovanni, Cherubino, and Despina, and their plans to build their new homes. While Don Giovanni and Cherubino decide on straw and sticks, Despina decides to research “huff-proof, puff-proof” building methods at the local library. In the meantime, the hungry wolf, Wolfgang Bigbad, blows down the homes of Despina’s brother and sister. Will Despina’s analysis of construction materials save their “bacon”? Is knowledge more powerful than a wolf’s appetite?

“The Three Little Pigs” is performed by Toledo Opera’s 2026-27 cohort of resident artists: Jenna Gisson, soprano; Caroline Friend, mezzo soprano; Jeremy Do, tenor; Timothy Krueger, baritone; and Charles Ligus, pianist. Chosen from a national pool of more than 150 applicants for a one-year residency in Toledo, these artists bring talent and skill to this program.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information about Opera on Wheels, visit toledoopera.org.

City of BG leaf collection to begin Monday, Nov. 9

Crews will begin the initial round of leaf collection on Monday, Nov. 9. Leaf collection is available for addresses that are eligible for city refuse/recycling collection and is not connected to the regular refuse/recycling collection schedule. A map has been posted to the city’s website to allow residents to follow crews’ progress.

It is encouraged to note that this will be the first round of leaf collection. The second round will tentatively begin in December.

Leaves should be placed loose curbside, not in bags. Residents should not place leaf piles near poles, mailboxes, guy wire, or any other structures. Leaves should not be placed in the street as this blocks storm drains during rain events. Also, there is a risk of parked cars with warm exhaust systems catching on fire when over dry leaves. Brush and other yard waste should not be placed in leaf piles.

Bowling Green residents may also take leaves to the drop-off site located behind the Public Works garage on Tarragon Drive, off East Poe Road. Brush and branches are not accepted at the drop-off site.

Residents may also consider leaving their leaves and using them to enrich their soil. Leaves can be raked into garden beds as natural mulch and fertilizer for the soil. Dry leaves can also be mowed over to fertilize grass. Grass clippings and finely chopped leaves add vital nutrients and organic matter to the lawn, improving lawn health.

The leaf collection map and guidelines may be found here: https://www.bgohio.gov/471/Leaf-Collection.

Mercy Health’s mobile mammography unit to make stops in Perrysburg

Mercy Health’s mobile mammography unit has visits scheduled throughout the region in November, including stops in Perrysburg.

The mobile mammography unit is customized for patient convenience and will deliver 3D mammograms to those with breasts age 40 and older. It is equipped with the newest 3D technology and offers patients the option of self-compression, meaning the patient will have the ability to control the compression once they are in position.

Stops include:

While mammogram screenings may be covered by insurance, for best coverage, verify if Mercy Health – St. Charles Hospital is an in-network provider with insurance carriers. If someone is uninsured or underinsured (has high deductibles), Mercy Health has financial need-based assistance programs available to help. If eligible, people may qualify for a no-cost mammogram. Call 1-800-929-6626 for more information.

Screenings at the Mercy Health mobile mammography unit are by appointment only. Call 833-MAMM-VAN to schedule a screening on the mobile unit.

To view the full list of dates and locations, visit mercy.com/toledomobilemamm.

Mercy Health encourages people to talk with their doctors about when they should have a screening mammogram. Screening mammograms are usually a covered benefit with most insurance carriers.

Certified radiologists read all mammograms and because a second look can mean a second chance, Mercy Health double-checks all mammograms with a computer-aided detection system that detects more breast cancer than mammography alone. Patients and their physicians will receive copies of the results.

BGSU ‘Green Game Day’ recycling to surpass 10,000 pounds, Tuesday, Nov. 10

Bowling Green State University is expected to surpass 10,000 pounds of recycled materials for the season during its home football game against Kent State on Tuesday, Nov. 10, as part of its longstanding “Green Game Day” initiative to reduce waste through recycling. BGSU has hosted “Green Game Day” since 2008 through coordinated efforts with fans, student volunteers, and the Office of Campus Sustainability.

For Tuesday’s game, efforts will begin at 4 p.m., when volunteers will engage with Falcon Football fans, distribute green recycling bags for tailgate recyclables, and educate fans about what can and cannot be recycled. Once fans head into the stadium for the 7 p.m. kickoff, volunteers will begin collecting the bags and soring the items to minimize contamination.

As the game ends, the hard work will continue, with Grounds Services staff and volunteers collecting bags from the stadium while student organizations clean up the seats and bleachers. After staff members load the recycled materials into a 30-yard dumpster, they weigh the contents.

BGSU has collected more than 100,000 pounds of recycled materials at home football games since the program began.

BGSU will compete against other universities as part of the GameDay Football Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge. The nationwide competition aims to reduce and recycle the waste generated at home football games. Each team must submit attendance figures for game day and tailgating, along with recycling totals from one home football game. In 2024, BGSU took third place in the “Recycling per Capita” category. Tuesday’s game could be the one game BGSU submits for the 2026 competition.

Efforts to expand waste reduction beyond football are already underway. “BGreen” initiatives will be introduced at BGSU Hockey home games on Nov. 20-21. Volunteers will staff waste stations throughout Slater Ice Arena and provide additional recycling bins.

McMaster to speak on Revolutionary War in Maumee River Valley at next museum tea, Thursday, Nov. 12

The Wood County Museum will host its own education coordinator, Michael McMaster, as the speaker for the upcoming Tea & Talk Series on Nov. 12, 2 p.m., at the Wood County Museum, 13660 County Home Road, Bowling Green.

The November tea is titled “The Revolutionary War on the Maumee River Valley.”  Although the Ohio Frontier was far removed from the better-known American Revolutionary War history, the Maumee River played an important, and little known, role during the conflict, 1776-1783. McMaster will share his knowledge about the Maumee River Valley and Ohio Frontier and its important part during the war.

Once again, the museum is partnering with The Summer Kitchen. The featured tea selection is called 1776. After the Boston Tea Party, the colonists boiled everything from pine needles, strawberry leaves, maple leaves and shrubs to stem their thirst for tea. This blend of Ceylon and Assam tea (both major teas growing in areas of the old British Empire) combines with the essence of strawberry and maple to capture the spirit of the revolution.

Reservations and payment need to be completed by Sunday, Nov. 8. There are two methods for payment. Either call 419-352-0967 and museum staff can assist, or visit woodcountyhistory.org to pay online. Admission includes tea and light refreshments by local caterer So Many Somethings out of Perrysburg, and the program. Member pricing is $30, while non-member and special-diet meals (gluten-free/vegan) are $35. All ticket sales are final and non-refundable.

This program is part of the 2026 Tea & Talk series hosted by the Wood County Museum.  A complete list of teas and other programs can be found at woodcountyhistory.org

Foell is an associate professor for the International Studies Program at BGSU. Her recent scholarship focus on German cinema is informed by years of research abroad and teaching in the World Languages and Cultures department.

By comparing the German and U.S. contexts, the project highlights shared dynamics as well as cultural and political differences shaping immigration discourse.”

Applications, donations now open for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren holiday outreach program, deadline Dec. 1

The role of Grandma and Grandpa is different for every grandparent. While some grandparents may see their grandchildren on a limited basis, others see them more frequently, and many are now raising their grandchildren. Raising grandchildren later in life often brings unique challenges. The role of raising children may be familiar, yet it can be an entirely unique and difficult experience.

As the holiday season approaches, children look forward to gifts. For some grandparents, this could be a stressful time as money may be tight. This holiday season, the Wood County Committee on Aging, Inc. is holding its tenth annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren holiday outreach project, partnering with Wood County Job and Family Services and Bowling Green Kiwanis. This project is intended to provide aid to grandparents who are 50 years of age and older living in Wood County, who have custody and are raising their grandchildren.

A completed application must be submitted to determine eligibility. One application per household with grandchildren ages 0-17 will be considered annually. The deadline for applications is Tuesday, Dec. 1. Applications may be returned to any of the Wood County senior centers.

For questions or to receive an application, contact the WCCOA Program Department at 419-353-5661 or toll-free at 1-800-367-4935. The application is also available online at https://wccoa.net/activities/special-events/.

Holiday outreach project funds raised through the senior centers in Wood County will be used by WCCOA to purchase gifts for eligible children. All gifts will be purchased and wrapped and delivered to the families prior to the holidays.

To purchase a gift for a child or make a monetary donation to the holiday outreach project, contact WCCOA for more information at 419-353-5661 or email programs@wccoa.net.
