Sara Hackler tackled her fear of heights all in the name of cancer.
The cancer survivor and current nurse cancer navigator at Wood County Hospital’s Maurer Family Cancer Center participated in a fundraiser for The Victory Center earlier this fall by rappelling 225 feet down the Toledo Edison Building.
She previously spoke about her fear of heights, unsure if she could follow through with the feat. (Read the pre-event story here.)
“Watching others rappel before my turn, I felt an unexpected sense of peace. I wasn’t anxious. I wasn’t scared. I was there for a purpose,” she said after successfully rappelling down the building. “Going over the edge of a 16-story building is scary, but cancer is beyond scary. When I went up that building, I knew my fate. I was coming down. That’s the complete opposite of what a patient feels when they’re told they have cancer.”
The event was about helping cancer patients and their families enjoy a class, a therapy session or an activity at The Victory Center that can help erase that blur, even for a small moment in time, she said.
She thanked everyone who helped her raise $1,700.82. Overall, the event surpassed its $200,000 goal by raising $218,000.
